To make sure that the art of lacemaking
is handed down to the future generations, the municipality
has created the Scuola per il Tombolo (school
of pillow lacemaking). It was inaugurated on 23rd November
1991 and it has been acknowledged by regional law number
122 of 4th November 1998.
It is establishing itself as an active part in training
lacemakers through a didactic programme which takes into
consideration all phases of lacemaking: from the pattern
to the printing, to the choice of the textile up to the
real technical execution essentially based on a pricking
paper or card.
Along with teaching, the school promotes the making and
marketing of the lace. The craft museum and market opened
on 27th December 1997 at Palazzo del Fanzago and
gives everyone who visits Pescocostanzo the chance to
see the many works displayed in it.
The Museum collects ancient laces from private collections,
from ecclesiastical dowries, some of them dating back
to the eighteenth century, as well as from modern collections
such as the one named the “Colazione del
Principe” (Prince’s breakfast) made
up of all the most significant pieces of the Abruzzo
crafts needed for setting a table: the tablecloth embroidered
with pillow lace from Pescocostanzo, the ceramic cups
from Castelli, the holder for the cups in silver filigree.
It was first showed within the project “Prima colazione:
i diversi territori”, during the 62nd International
Exhibition for craft, held in Florence at the Fortezza
da Basso in 1998. |
