Pescocostanzo is a Renaissance village
located in the Abruzzo Appenine, province of L’Aquila,
rich in craft traditions that spans from Gold Filigree
to that of carving stones as well as wrought iron and
Tombolo (pillow lace).
Almost certainly these activities have propagated in
Pescocostanzo around the second half of the fourteenth
century, introduced by the women of Lombard masons who
came to rebuild the village destroyed by the 1456 earthquake.
Since then the art of pillow lace has been handed down
from mother to daughter for centuries up to the present
day. Still a few decades ago, the first thing a little
girl would have learnt was how to make pillow lace, even
before learning how to read and write. Within the tranquillity
of the households, together with their neighbours, the
women used to spend their days working on this ancient
craft by the fireplace, where the clashing of the bobbins
would spread its sound in each household. |
